It has been an amazing two and a half years since we first opened our doors to the cats of Perth. Over this time our team has nearly tripled in size, and we have reinvested our profits directly back into the business to purchase more medical equipment and advanced staff training to help us achieve our mission of being the centre of excellence for feline veterinary care in Perth. Our core values of excellence, integrity, compassion and enthusiasm are present in everything that we do and but most importantly of all, we all love cats!

Last week, our team enjoyed a chance to spend a night out together at the Westin Hotel to celebrate becoming a Telstra Business Award Finalist at their Gala Awards Dinner. The Telstra Business Awards are the most prestigious and highly respected business awards in Australia and the judging process involves multiple stages to allow an in-depth view of each nominated business. Just becoming a finalist is a huge achievement and this year there were over 10 000 entries.

We entered the Emerging and Energised Category which is for small businesses under three years old. There were six finalists chosen for our state in our category; Perth Cat Hospital, Ete Swimwear, Openn Negotiation, Laundry 43, The Game Changers and Ultimate Tax and Advisory. As finalists, our practice manager Colleen and I were invited to a business workshop the night before the Awards where we were able to network with other inspiring entrepreneurs and meet our fellow finalists. We each had to introduce ourselves and tell everyone “that moment” that led us to being a successful business. We both felt so humbled as we heard their successes and felt so proud to have got this far in the awards.

The Awards night was a very glamorous affair and it was so beautiful to see all our team out of their surgical scrubs and dressed up to the nines! We arrived not expecting anything more than enjoying the evening and the success of being a finalist. When they announced Perth Cat Hospital as the State winner, our whole table whooped for joy! I think we were the loudest table at the event! Here’s the video of our winning moment and my acceptance speech.

We are so honoured to win a Telstra Business Award, not only because it reflects all our of hard work and achievements, but it helps us to be a bigger community voice on all aspects of cat welfare and health. It helps raise the profile of the veterinary industry and in the face of corporatisation of our industry, I hope this helps encourage small, locally owned vets to differentiate themselves and focus on what we love; our patients and our clients.
